My Journey as a Freelancer

I am very much happy when I’ve been selected as one of the scholars in DICT Rural impact sourcing technical training. I can learn new skills such as web page creation, content writing, blogging, graphics editing and many more.
It was a 10 days hands-on training, started last October 3, 2017 and ended October 13, 2017. But our journey doesn’t finish there, we still need to perform some task which are needed for the completion of training, to promote and campaign the website of our MSME partners, as well as our Freelancer profile for 21 days on FB, Linkedin, social media sites, freelancer sites such as upwork, onlinejobs.ph, apply and submit proposals so we can have an online work.
Last week, I met the husband of my high school batch mate “sir Bench” at their business office since they contact me to help them install additional router and fix the internet which happens to be an online worker. After I finished with the repair, we sat and take a break and while were having our merienda he shared how he started, it was year 2009 when he applied for work online as transcriptionist on elance at $3 per hour rate at his hometown @ Davao. Then a few more years his clients doubled, he does data entry work, research, email marketing. Until this year, he has plenty of clients abroad.
He gave also advice that if I want to start working as a freelancer, I should start with basic office works such as data entry, transcriptionist job with minimal rate per hr. I also need to edit my resume, put my known skills/expertise. He also told me that I should not put the skills I don’t know because when you do so and an employer hires you already and ask if you really know about this then you’ll be sorry. So be precise and accurate about the information you will give. If there are some trainings offered, learn more so you can improve yourself.
He also told me that I should not accept many works that you can’t handle if you lack on time. Because some employer may rate you bad if you’re not performing well. And if you’re building an online profile, you should be on contract so the client can rate you and be shown on your profile. Because this can be a great help in applying/accepting future works.
He also shared that some foreigner clients are very generous and kind if they liked your performance and works. He said that some of his gadgets such as laptops and cellphones had been given by his clients.
Online work is very fulfilling since you work at your home or any place comfortable to you at your preferred time.
I submitted proposals on different online sites and tried to apply. One day I checked my email and got a reply from a client that I need to submit my resume. I responded and I still waiting for his response. I am hoping that I will be selected and be hired so that I can now start working online.
I will update this blog as soon I get a response from him. Thank you for visiting and reading my blogpost.
